Neither AP ships with a PoE injector; Ubiquiti sells those as separate accessories, so budget for switch PoE ports or an injector either way. Read the 5 GHz row twice, because it is the most interesting line in the table. The older U6 Pro posts a higher 5 GHz PHY rate (4.8 vs 4.3 Gbps) because it has four spatial streams to the U7 Pro’s two. The U7 Pro only stays close by leaning on 240 MHz channels and WiFi 7 modulation, which very few client devices can use today.
Where the U7 Pro wins
The 2.5 GbE uplink is the practical headline. The U6 Pro’s single 1 GbE port caps real-world wired throughput at roughly 940 Mbps of TCP goodput no matter what the radios negotiate. If you have a multi-gig internet plan or a NAS behind a 2.5/10G switch, the U6 Pro is the bottleneck and the U7 Pro is not. If your WAN is 500 Mbps and your switch is all-gigabit, this advantage is theoretical.
6 GHz is clean spectrum. In an apartment block where 40 SSIDs fight over 5 GHz, a 2x2 phone on a 320 MHz-capable 6 GHz channel will beat the same phone on a congested 160 MHz channel at 5 GHz, and it will do it with lower and more consistent latency. That is the real WiFi 7 story for most homes: not peak throughput, but an uncontested band.
WiFi 7 features keep arriving in firmware. Multi-Link Operation, which lets a WiFi 7 client hold simultaneous links on multiple bands through one AP, requires a WiFi 7 AP on firmware 7.1.18 or later per Ubiquiti’s MLO documentation. The U6 Pro will never get any of this. Check the firmware requirements before enabling MLO.
Where the U6 Pro pushes back
4x4 on 5 GHz matters in dense-client rooms. Almost every phone and laptop is a 2x2 client. A 4x4 AP can use the extra streams for downlink MU-MIMO and better beamforming across many 2x2 clients; a 2x2 AP cannot. A living room with two dozen 5 GHz-only devices can genuinely behave better on the U6 Pro than on the U7 Pro, because most of those clients will never touch 6 GHz.
Lower PoE draw. The U6 Pro pulls 13 W max on standard PoE (802.3af); the U7 Pro wants PoE+ at up to 21 W. On a small PoE switch this is not academic: three U7 Pros can demand 63 W at peak, which blows past the budget of many entry-level 8-port PoE switches and forces a hardware upgrade the spec sheet never mentions.
It is $30 cheaper and spec-rated IP54. The U6 Pro’s spec sheet lists an IP54 rating, which makes it a defensible pick for a covered porch or garage.
The 6 GHz fine print
Before the 6 GHz radio sells you, read Ubiquiti’s 6 GHz guide. All 6 GHz networks must run WPA3 or OWE, and PMF (protected management frames) comes with it. Plenty of legacy and IoT clients speak neither, and they will either refuse to join or flap constantly on an SSID that includes 6 GHz. Ubiquiti’s own recommendation is a separate SSID without 6 GHz for those devices.
In practice that means the U7 Pro works best in the same design you should be running anyway: a WPA3-capable SSID for trusted devices, and a separate 2.4/5 GHz WPA2 SSID mapped to an IoT VLAN with deny-by-default firewall rules toward your LAN. Also remember 6 GHz physics: higher frequency means shorter range and worse wall penetration than 5 GHz. One U7 Pro will not carry 6 GHz across a large house; the band shines in the room the AP is actually in, which makes placement and channel planning more decisive than the generation number on the box.
What you actually need
Multi-gig internet, WiFi 7 phones/laptops, congested airspace: U7 Pro. The 2.5 GbE uplink and clean 6 GHz band are the two upgrades you will feel, and MLO is live on current firmware. The $30 delta is trivial against the lifespan of a ceiling-mounted AP.
Gigabit-or-slower WAN, all-gigabit switching, lots of existing 2.4/5 GHz clients: U6 Pro. The 1 GbE port is not a bottleneck for you, the 4x4 5 GHz radio serves a dense 2x2 client population well, and it runs on plain 802.3af PoE you already have.
Buying today with no constraints: U7 Pro. New client devices are shipping WiFi 7 by default, and the U6 Pro will spend its whole service life unable to touch 6 GHz. Just check your switch’s PoE+ budget before you order three of them.
