UniFi vs Omada for a home network is a choice between complete configurations: controller, gateway, switches, and access points. Both offer local management and remote access options. Choose a controller model first, then compare hardware with the ports and power budget your plan needs. The tables below use vendor documentation and listed prices, rather than measured performance.

UniFi vs Omada: controller options and licence model

Controller hosting and remote access are different purchases. A cloud portal can connect to a controller running locally; it does not necessarily host that controller for you.

What Omada Cloud Essentials includes

Omada documents Cloud Essentials as a free cloud controller with a smaller feature set than Cloud Standard. Its controller comparison lists VLANs and basic management in Essentials, while functions such as PPSK, Open API, and IPS/IDS differ by controller option.

Treat that as a feature checklist rather than a reason to reject the whole platform. Check the controller comparison and the exact device’s compatibility before ordering. A free cloud tier and a local hardware controller are different configurations, even when they manage APs bearing the same brand.

Hardware price per AP: a dated comparison

These are two Wi-Fi 6 examples, not identical radios or a measured performance ranking. Prices were checked on 2026-09-06 and are quoted in the currency displayed by the linked stores.

The EAP650 has the lower advertised price in this pair. That does not establish the lower total for every Omada deployment: AP quantity, the controller choice, and switching can change the result. Compare APs with the required bands, uplinks, mounting options, and client capabilities before multiplying the price by room count.

For a quote in euros, request the same local SKU and hardware revision on both sides, with VAT inclusion stated consistently. Compare delivered totals in one currency rather than treating the dollar examples as local prices. Keep subscription terms on the same time horizon as the hardware purchase.

Switch PoE budget: compare watts and powered ports

These figures come from the Lite 8 PoE specifications and SG2210P specifications. They illustrate why equal Ethernet port counts do not imply equal powered-device capacity. Check the hardware revision in a seller’s listing against the manufacturer’s corresponding specification.

List every powered AP and camera, verify each port’s supported power type, and compare their combined requirement with the switch budget. Use AP and switch PoE planning for that calculation. Review UniFi uplinks and link aggregation separately if several APs share a busy uplink.

Compare a complete home network before choosing

Write two bills of materials for the same requirements. Each should include the gateway, controller hardware or hosting, APs, switch, power accessories, cabling, and storage if recording is planned. Mark which items are already owned and which need purchasing. Avoid comparing one platform’s promotional AP price with the other’s entire console.

Use the following decision sequence:

  1. Decide whether you need managed VLANs and several APs, or whether a simpler router fits.
  2. Choose local hardware, self-hosting, or hosted management based on who will maintain it.
  3. Match AP specifications and placement to the clients that need coverage.
  4. Verify powered ports, total watts, and the uplink path.
  5. Compare the delivered hardware total and recurring fees over the same period.

Which ecosystem fits the plan?

Choose UniFi when its supported console and application combination matches the build you want. Choose Omada when its documented controller option and hardware quote meet the same requirements at a preferable total cost. Neither conclusion requires claiming one vendor always has better coverage, a better interface, or a lower subscription bill.
